FRSC Declares War On Overloading: Hundreds Of Vehicles Caught In Two Days
According to Nivo News, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Command in the Federal Capital Territory has apprehended more than 250 commercial vehicles within two days for overloading, as the agency begins strict enforcement of traffic safety regulations across Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The development was confirmed by the FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Felix Theman, in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Education Officer, Helen Ntaji. The enforcement exercise, which commenced on October 2, specifically cracked down on the unlawful practice of carrying two passengers in the front seat of taxis.
Commander Theman said the high number of offenders recorded in just 48 hours reflected the widespread disregard for road safety standards, despite months of sustained public sensitisation and engagement with transport unions. He stressed that his administration’s top priority remains restoring the dignity and safety of passengers, adding that firm enforcement remains the most effective and civil approach to ensure compliance.
Theman explained that overloading compromises safety by making the use of seatbelts impossible, damaging vehicle suspension and tyres, and reducing drivers’ ability to maintain control in emergency situations.
He also disclosed that the operation is being executed in collaboration with mobile magistrate courts, ensuring immediate prosecution of offenders. According to him, full deployment of mobile courts across the FCT will commence on October 6 to further strengthen enforcement.
The commander warned that commercial vehicles operating below safety standards risk outright impoundment if not upgraded. He added that transport unions have pledged their cooperation with the new measures and urged passengers to support the initiative to safeguard their right to safe and dignified transportation.
