According to Nivo News, NIMC has been working closely with various government agencies to drive this initiative, which draws on data from both the commission and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) to enhance citizens’ access to essential services.

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to the project, stressing that without a robust DPI, his administration’s eight-point agenda—focusing on food security, poverty reduction, economic growth, job creation, inclusivity, access to capital, the rule of law, and the fight against corruption—cannot be fully achieved. Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the president emphasized the need for identity harmonization to guarantee equitable access to social amenities and safeguard citizens’ data.

NIMC’s Director General, Abisoye Coker Odusote, has introduced stricter security protocols to protect the National Identity Database. Licensed Verification Agents and Front-End Partners (FEPs), including diaspora operators, are now subjected to rigorous vetting to align with global best practices, with violators facing sanctions. She has also urged collaboration with security agencies to ensure compliance with international data security standards.

The commission has also launched joint efforts with the National Population Commission (NPC) to digitalize birth registration, which NIMC insists is crucial for national development. In addition, NIMC recently resolved long-standing financial obligations to FEPs contracted in 2021 to scale up NIN enrollment, with support from the World Bank and Identity for Development (ID4D) project. This move, stakeholders say, has boosted confidence in the commission’s leadership.

Furthermore, the National Assembly has begun reviewing the NIMC Establishment Act of 2007 to strengthen its regulatory functions.
