Tension In Abuja: Workers Plot Picketing As Lawmakers Resume After Break

Published

on

According to Nivo News, the management of the National Assembly has raised alarm over an alleged plan by some staff to stage a protest that could disrupt legislative activities as lawmakers resume plenary on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A group under the banner of “Concerned Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) Members” had notified the Clerk to the National Assembly of their intention to begin peaceful picketing of the Assembly complex on the same date. Their demands include correction of salary shortfalls, remittance of statutory deductions, implementation of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS), and payment of outstanding allowances, among others.

However, the official leadership of PASAN has distanced itself from the planned action, stressing that it remains the only recognized union of Assembly staff and has been engaging management through established channels.

The Secretary of Human Resources and Staff Development, Essien Eyo Essien, in a circular issued on behalf of the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, described the proposed protest as unlawful and a threat to national security. He warned staff against participating, stating that those who go ahead risk severe disciplinary action. Security reports, he noted, indicated that some individuals were collaborating with anonymous actors to mobilize and incite workers for the protest.

Management further accused the agitators of persistently destabilizing the Assembly with frivolous petitions and misinformation, despite repeated efforts at engagement. It urged staff to ignore calls for industrial action and assured them of safety within the National Assembly complex.

Meanwhile, in a letter dated October 3, 2025, the “Concerned PASAN Members” insisted they would go ahead with their planned picketing, citing constitutional and trade union rights. They argued that their grievances had been ignored for too long and said the protest was necessary to draw the attention of political leaders and the wider public.

In a swift counter, PASAN Chairman, Comrade Sunday Sabiyyi, issued a statement dissociating the union from the planned action, emphasizing that most of the issues raised were already being addressed in collaboration with management. He urged members to remain at their duty posts and warned that any disruption would tarnish the image of the Assembly.

The standoff now raises tension ahead of the lawmakers’ resumption, with management vowing to enforce order while the aggrieved staff threaten to push ahead with their demonstration.

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

PDP spokesman, Comrade Olushola Adewara, said the alleged plan to reopen the case amounts to an attempt to politicise a matter that has already been concluded by the courts.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

PDP urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to focus on governance rather than what it described as attempts to revive old political narratives.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.

He advocated issue-based campaigns ahead of 2027, rejecting “money politics” and challenging aspirants to public debates on governance.

Showunmi maintained that he has no history of violence or political thuggery, insisting the election should be centred on ideas and development plans for the state.

In response, IPAC leadership and other political actors at the event called for collaboration and careful selection of leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
