The initiative, launched under her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) programme tagged “Flow with Confidence,” is aimed at addressing menstrual health challenges faced by young girls, particularly those in underserved areas. At the Lagos flag-off event, where she was represented by Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Tinubu emphasised that no girl in today’s world should be deprived of education due to the inability to afford sanitary products.

She described the intervention as a decisive step to curb school absenteeism and dropouts caused by menstrual health barriers. “Some girls resort to unsafe alternatives, while others simply stay away from school. This must stop,” she declared, stressing that the distribution of a one-year supply of disposable sanitary pads will enable 370,000 schoolgirls to stay in school with dignity and confidence.

The programme, launched simultaneously in Lagos, Borno, Cross River, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, and Kebbi states, will see every state and the FCT receive 10,000 packs of pads through governors’ wives and RHI coordinators. Mrs. Tinubu noted that the sanitary pads were locally produced by Uniglory Nigeria Limited in Ikorodu, Lagos, at a total cost of N2,550,297,150.

She urged local government chairmen to ensure strict distribution in rural communities, warning against the sale of the pads. She also called on corporate organisations, government agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community heads to support and monitor the exercise, ensuring wider reach and accountability.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, commended the initiative, describing it as a demonstration of the First Lady’s commitment to the well-being and education of the Nigerian girl child, particularly at the grassroots.
