According to Nivo News, the Neo-Black Movement of Africa (NBM), Lekki Chapter, has raised alarm over the recurring flooding crisis in Lagos, particularly in the Lekki axis, stressing the urgent need for a more sustainable and collaborative solution.

Speaking during the commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, the chapter’s president, Erauyi Agbon-Ifo, described the flooding problem as a yearly ordeal that continues to devastate homes, businesses, vehicles, and livelihoods, resulting in losses worth millions of naira. He emphasised that residents are forced to rebuild their lives repeatedly, a situation he said calls for stronger government intervention and partnership with private stakeholders and civic organisations.

Agbon-Ifo further urged the Lagos State Government to establish a structured compensation and insurance framework for residents, arguing that tax-paying citizens should not bear the brunt of inadequate flood preparedness. He pointed out that while other coastal states such as Rivers also witness heavy rains, they do not experience flooding of the same magnitude as Lekki, underscoring the urgent need for proactive measures in Lagos.

The movement also extended its sympathy to victims of the latest floods and called for improved infrastructure maintenance, transparent flood management projects, and heightened public awareness on prevention strategies.

Reiterating the group’s commitment to partner with government and stakeholders, Agbon-Ifo said true leadership is reflected in the prioritisation of citizens’ welfare. He expressed optimism that with collective effort, Lagos can overcome its flood crisis and ensure the safety, security, and wellbeing of residents.
