Shock Twist In World Cup Qualifiers: Nigeria, Benin, Rwanda Back In The Hunt
According to Nivo News, the race for qualification in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been dramatically reshaped following FIFA’s decision to sanction South Africa for breaching player eligibility rules. The global football body deducted three points from Bafana Bafana after Teboho Mokoena was fielded in a March 21, 2025, qualifier against Lesotho, a match South Africa initially won 2-0. The result has now been overturned to a 3-0 victory for Lesotho, with South Africa fined CHF 10,000 and Mokoena handed a warning.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Reacting to the ruling, Gernot Rohr, head coach of the Benin national team, described it as “a logical outcome” that has given his side a stronger footing in the group. Rohr, a former Nigeria coach, stressed that the Cheetahs are now well-positioned but acknowledged the challenges ahead with crucial matches against Rwanda in Kigali and Nigeria in Uyo.
“If I have a good calculator, we are now the leader in Group C, but with two difficult games left,” Rohr noted, while emphasizing his belief that Benin could still make history by securing qualification.
George Aluo, a member of the Nigeria Football Federation and Chairman of the Nigeria National League, welcomed the decision, describing it as an opportunity for Nigeria to push harder in the race. He highlighted that Rwanda could play a decisive role, especially if they manage to upset Benin in their upcoming fixture.
“The decision has thrown the group wide open,” Aluo remarked, adding that all four contenders—Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, and Rwanda—remain firmly in the hunt for the ticket to North America.
Rohr, however, cautioned against underestimating his Benin side, reiterating that they are ready for the October showdown. He also predicted that the battle could go down to the wire, with even Zimbabwe capable of causing surprises against South Africa.
With just two rounds of fixtures left—Lesotho vs Nigeria, Rwanda vs Benin, and Zimbabwe vs South Africa on October 12, followed by Nigeria vs Benin and South Africa vs Rwanda on October 14—the race for Group C’s automatic World Cup spot remains fiercely unpredictable, heightening anticipation among fans across the continent.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
