According to Nivo News, the dispute between PENGASSAN and the Dangote Refinery intensified on Sunday, September 28, 2025, after the union instructed its members nationwide to withdraw their services in protest against the reported dismissal of more than 800 workers. The union described the move as a direct attack on labour rights and the freedom of association, pointing out that the mass sack followed the decision of refinery employees to enroll in PENGASSAN.
The management of the refinery, however, maintained that the terminations were part of an internal restructuring process. The company has also opposed unionisation within its workforce, sparking further accusations of anti-labour practices.
Addressing the crisis during a televised interview on Sunday Politics, Osifo claimed Dangote has been sabotaging the Nigerian economy despite enjoying substantial benefits from the country. He argued that the business mogul owes much of his success to special privileges granted by the government, including exclusive licences for flour, sugar, and salt importation, as well as access to subsidised foreign exchange used in building the refinery.
Osifo insisted that such practices amount to economic sabotage and called for urgent intervention to protect workers’ rights and restore fairness to Nigeria’s industrial landscape.
