Sanusi Slams Nigeria’s Leaders: “We Waste Time On Irrelevant Issues”
The Emir of Kano, Lamido Muhammadu Sanusi II, has lamented Nigeria’s long history of poor leadership, stressing that the country has been unfortunate in producing quality leaders capable of steering it towards meaningful development.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking at the second edition of the Kano International Poetry Festival (KAPFEST) held on Saturday, the former Central Bank Governor described the country’s leadership over the years as “lousy,” warning that good governance remains the only pathway to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges.
According to Nivo News, the first-class monarch criticized the tendency of Nigerian leaders to focus on irrelevant issues while their counterparts across the world deliberate on global concerns such as climate change and artificial intelligence.
“You rise and fall with the quality of your leadership, and Nigeria has had lousy leadership for a long time. You cannot give what you do not have. Until we begin to carefully consider those we choose to lead us, nothing will change,” Sanusi said.
He further questioned the quality of debates dominating Nigeria’s political space, describing them as petty and outdated. “While the world is discussing artificial intelligence and climate change, we are still trapped in conversations about ethnicity and religion, issues we should have moved past decades ago,” he added.
Sanusi also defended the federal government’s decision to remove fuel subsidy, arguing that the policy was long overdue and that sustaining it would have bankrupted the country. He explained that trillions spent on subsidy could have been invested in building refineries and creating jobs locally instead of enriching foreign refiners.
“If we had made the right decision in 2012, we would not be in this position today. I have nothing against subsidies when they support production, but subsidizing consumption only drains the economy,” he emphasized.
The emir challenged Nigerian youths to take responsibility for the future of the country, urging them to rise above outdated politics and push for transformative leadership.
