Nation On Edge: Ex-Military Leaders Sound Alarm Over Bl**dshed
Retired Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Yusuf Buratai, has stressed that Nigeria’s security challenges cannot be solved by the military alone, insisting that the roots of the crisis were planted by political actors.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Buratai explained that insecurity in the country is not merely a military issue but a political problem that has been handed over to the armed forces while those who caused it remain in the background. “It is not a matter of relying on the military completely to solve the entire security problem. The underlying causes started from political actors, and, as such, it was essentially a political issue. But this is now left for the military, while the political actors are staying behind,” he noted.
He recalled warning during his tenure as Army Chief that Nigeria’s insurgency could last longer if urgent steps were not taken. He compared the fight against insecurity to the nationwide effort against Covid-19, suggesting that similar mass mobilization, community resilience, and collective responsibility are needed to confront banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping.
Buratai emphasized that communities, local governments, traditional leaders, and individuals must play active roles in complementing military efforts. He also warned against demoralizing soldiers with negative commentary about funding or performance, saying their sacrifices must be recognized and supported.
On the issue of state policing, the retired general expressed support but cautioned against political misuse, stressing that Nigeria must first develop a system where such outfits operate independently and without interference.
Buratai concluded that insecurity requires a multi-faceted solution that involves political will, social reforms, improved welfare for security operatives, and grassroots collaboration. He maintained that while the military remains vital, it cannot singlehandedly resolve a crisis that has deep political and societal roots.
