“Fashion Designers Are Not Tailors — Oghenekioja Draws The Line”

Published

on

Obi-Egbedi Oghenekioja, a Delta State-born haute couture designer, has shed light on the realities of Nigeria’s fashion industry, stressing the unique role of designers and the challenges they face in sustaining the business.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking in an interview, Oghenekioja explained that fashion design goes beyond tailoring, noting that while designers are responsible for creating patterns, concepts, and original styles, tailors serve as the technical backbone that brings these designs to life through sewing. He emphasized that both professions are complementary but should not be mistaken as the same.

Reflecting on the growth of the industry over the past two decades, he stated that entertainers from the music and comedy scenes have helped project Nigerian fashion to the global stage by pushing designers into the limelight. He, however, insisted that aspiring designers must undergo formal training, pointing out that fashion is not a career one can simply wake up to pursue without proper education, exposure, and skill development. According to him, Delta State already hosts fashion schools, including courses at universities and polytechnics.

On the major hurdles faced by professionals, Oghenekioja identified irregular power supply, lack of skilled manpower to operate advanced machines, and the scarcity of textile mills as major setbacks. He added that the rising dollar rate has worsened the situation, making production costs unpredictable. Citing a recent experience, he said he charged N4 million for a job but ended up spending over N5 million due to inflation, which led to a loss.

Despite these challenges, he maintained that fashion remains a highly lucrative industry, especially for those who build strong market value and work with high-profile clients. He revealed that his clientele largely includes top influencers such as musicians and comedians, which helps him sustain business and access premium customers.

Oghenekioja also lamented Nigerians’ preference for imported fashion materials, explaining that many people wrongly assume foreign products are more valuable. He stressed that locally produced designs often provide better quality and a better fit than imported mass-produced items, which are not always tailored to individual needs.

According to him, Nigerian designers are now stepping in to fill the gaps created by importation, ensuring customers get bespoke and more authentic fashion pieces that truly reflect their style.

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.

He advocated issue-based campaigns ahead of 2027, rejecting “money politics” and challenging aspirants to public debates on governance.

Showunmi maintained that he has no history of violence or political thuggery, insisting the election should be centred on ideas and development plans for the state.

In response, IPAC leadership and other political actors at the event called for collaboration and careful selection of leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
