Kebbi Assembly Rejects Malami’s Petition, Brands It A Political Distraction
The Kebbi State House of Assembly has rejected a petition by former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, accusing Governor Nasir Idris of employing political thugs and foreign mercenaries to destabilise the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking to journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, Assembly Speaker Muhammad Usman described Malami’s claims as baseless, unfounded, and mischievous, emphasizing that Kebbi remains one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states. “Kebbi State has, over the years, earned a reputation as one of the most peaceful states in the country. Any attempt to tarnish that record by some jealous individuals is an attack not only on the government but also on the good people of Kebbi State,” Usman stated.
He argued that the petition was a deliberate effort to sow fear and division among residents. “The allegations are not only baseless and unfounded, but they are also clearly designed to distract the government from its developmental strides,” he added.
The Speaker underscored that the Kebbi State Government has no history of engaging mercenaries or political thugs, asserting that its politics are anchored in dialogue and respect for democratic values. “Our politics is rooted in dialogue and respect for democratic principles. Therefore, these allegations are malicious and entirely without proof,” Usman said. He also noted that security agencies in the state have reported no intelligence linking the government to such activities.
While urging residents to remain calm, Usman called on security agencies to investigate Malami’s claims thoroughly and prosecute him if found culpable, warning that this would serve as a deterrent to others spreading false alarms.
Malami, now a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi, had on Wednesday written to the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, alleging a plot to destabilise the state. In his petition, he claimed that certain political actors were collaborating with mercenaries from Niger Republic and trafficking illegal arms to intimidate citizens, silence opposition, and incite unrest.
He further alleged that he and other indigenes were attacked by armed thugs on September 1, describing the perpetrators as acting with impunity. Malami warned that these purported activities posed serious threats not only to Kebbi’s peace but also to Nigeria’s national security and sovereignty.
