Atalanta manager Ivan Juric has made it clear that he will not plead with Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman to play for the club, despite the player recently returning to first-team training.
Lookman, 27, had been absent from training earlier this summer after reportedly submitting a transfer request in an attempt to leave Bergamo. His efforts to secure a move, including multiple approaches from Inter Milan, were unsuccessful as Atalanta rejected all offers.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Serie A clash against Lecce, Juric described the situation as difficult but stressed that no individual player is bigger than the club. The coach emphasized his positive relationship with Lookman while maintaining that he will not coerce the forward into playing.
“This is an unpleasant, difficult situation. With Lookman, I have a very good relationship, but I don’t have to beg him to play,” Juric told reporters. “We are Atalanta, and we represent the city. We need what Atalanta stands for: work, humility. These are the values that define us. I do not have to pray to anyone. Atalanta needs strong human values.”
Lookman, a Super Eagles star who scored a memorable hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final, was linked to several top European clubs during the transfer window. However, no deal materialized, and he returned to Atalanta under tense circumstances.
Although Juric has allowed Lookman to resume full training, the forward will not feature in the weekend match against Lecce. The club aims to manage both his reintegration and overall team harmony.
Atalanta, which finished the previous Serie A season strongly, will depend on other attacking options as they seek to maintain momentum in the early weeks of the campaign. Lookman’s future at Gewiss Stadium remains uncertain, with his long-term role contingent on embracing Juric’s philosophy of humility and hard work.

Speaking to journalists after the session, Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri emphasized that leveraging cheaper gas alternatives will cushion the economic blow of fuel subsidy removal. Diri explained that targeting transportation acts as a strategic catalyst because high travel costs directly inflate the market prices of food items like yams and garri. By cutting transport overheads, the initiative aims to trigger a positive multiplier effect across every sector of the economy to ease the burden on everyday citizens.
