Dangote Petrol Sold Cheaper In Togo, Nigerians Left Paying More – Importers Sound Alarm

Published

Some fuel importers and depot owners have raised concerns over what they describe as a double standard by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, accusing the company of selling petrol to international traders at prices ₦65 lower per litre than those offered to local marketers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Depot and Petroleum Product Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) and the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) argued that this practice undermines competition and puts domestic businesses at a disadvantage.

DAPPMAN’s Executive Secretary, Olufemi Adewole, revealed that several members had sourced petrol from Lomé, Togo, where international traders received the product at significantly lower rates than Nigerian marketers. He explained that repeated requests for supply allocations from the refinery were either ignored or subjected to conditions that made local operations unprofitable, forcing importers to seek alternatives.

“Dangote is selling to international traders at ₦65 cheaper than what he is selling to us. In some cases, we were able to buy from those channels and still bring it to Nigeria. They claim they are buying in bulk when exporting to Lomé,” Adewole said. He stressed that domestic players require discounts to cover freight and other costs to remain competitive.

PETROAN President Billy Gillis-Harry supported DAPPMAN’s claims, confirming that the refinery’s products were cheaper in Togo than in Nigeria.

In response, Dangote Refinery dismissed the allegations, suggesting that DAPPMAN was behind recent tensions with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), which accused the company of anti-union practices. A company spokesperson questioned why marketers were sourcing fuel from Lomé instead of established suppliers in Russia or Malta and confirmed that free deliveries from the refinery would commence on Monday.

Adewole accused the refinery of using strategically timed price cuts to destabilize the market. He recalled that Alhaji Aliko Dangote previously vowed to reduce prices whenever importers brought in cargoes, which he described as calculated moves to stifle competition rather than patriotic interventions.

DAPPMAN emphasized that Nigeria’s downstream sector cannot rely on a single refinery. Adewole stated that while Dangote Refinery contributes significantly, it meets only 30–35% of national demand, with the remainder supplied by independent marketers under strict regulations. He criticized the refinery’s “free delivery” program, saying it imposed hidden costs by requiring marketers to lift allocations using Dangote-owned trucks at commercial rates.

Meanwhile, Dangote Refinery announced plans to deploy compressed natural gas (CNG) powered trucks as part of its logistics-free distribution initiative, aiming to reduce the gantry price to ₦820 per litre, with expectations of lower pump prices across key states.

The pricing dispute unfolds amid tensions between Dangote and NUPENG, which recently threatened industrial action over alleged anti-union practices. DAPPMAN expressed concern over the escalation, warning that the dispute could further destabilize fuel supply in an already fragile downstream market.

Chinasa’s move has attracted attention given his role in Abia State, where he previously worked closely with the Labour Party-led administration as a bridge between the state government and federal lawmakers.

His defection also signals a political shift, as he had earlier contested against Benjamin Kalu for the Bende Federal Constituency seat in the 2023 general elections on opposing platforms.
