Governor Eno Declares Health Emergency In Akwa Ibom

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has declared a state of emergency in the health sector following a review of his administration’s healthcare development roadmap. According to Nivo News, the announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, after the State Executive Council meeting held at Government House, Uyo, on Saturday. He explained that one of the directives under the emergency is a broad upgrade of medical facilities across the state.

Umanah further revealed that the healthcare recruitment portal has been reopened to employ 2,000 workers, with the requirement of voters’ identity cards waived for applicants. He noted that Governor Eno also approved the upgrading of health training institutions, fresh enrolment of medical professionals, and the engagement of retired but willing health personnel on contract.

The commissioner added that the government has set up an Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee comprising representatives of key ministries and agencies to oversee the effective and timely implementation of the emergency measures.

In addition, the executive council proposed a supplementary budget bill of ₦695 billion, with ₦125.66 billion allocated for recurrent expenditure and ₦569.33 billion for capital projects. This raises the state’s total budget for 2025 from ₦995 billion to ₦1.65 trillion.

By focusing on transparent processes that reflect actual votes cast, stakeholders can prevent unnecessary legal battles and restore total confidence in the democratic mandate of the electorate.
