Fuel Crisis Alert: NUPENG Orders Tanker Drivers To Boycott Dangote Depots
Nigeria may be on the brink of another fuel shortage as tensions escalate between the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and Dangote Refinery, threatening nationwide disruption in petroleum product distribution.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to NUPENG, the union has instructed its Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch to halt loading petroleum products from Dangote depots starting Monday, September 8. In a statement signed by NUPENG President Williams Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale, the union accused Dangote Refinery of engaging in anti-labour practices that undermine the livelihoods of its members.
The dispute centers on Dangote Refinery’s reported refusal to allow drivers recruited for its 10,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks to join any trade union. NUPENG described the move as a violation of the right of association guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution and a breach of international labour laws to which Nigeria is a signatory. Attempts to resolve the matter, including appeals through the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), were reportedly ignored.
The union also alleged that on August 29, MRS Holdings, owned by Dangote’s cousin, Alhaji Sayyu Dantata, began recruiting drivers under the condition that they abstain from joining unions. NUPENG said repeated efforts to compel Dangote and his cousin to adhere to global best practices had failed, warning that such actions amount to the modern-day enslavement of Nigerian workers.
NUPENG criticized what it described as the accumulation of wealth by denying workers a voice, asserting that Dangote’s actions threaten the livelihoods of thousands of tanker drivers. The union recalled its support for the refinery during construction, expecting job creation, sector growth, and improved welfare. Instead, it accused Dangote of attempting to monopolize distribution, crush competition, and inflate prices, describing the actions as economic sabotage rather than philanthropy.
The union urged the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to use its powers under Section 32 of the Petroleum Industry Act to curb abuses of dominance and restrictive business practices. It emphasized that the right to unionize is protected under Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution and ILO Convention No. 87, ratified by Nigeria in 1960.
Warning of nationwide action, NUPENG stated that if the situation continues, its members would be mobilized across the country. The PTD branch will begin seeking alternative employment from Monday, September 8, 2025, if Dangote and his cousin proceed with replacing all tanker drivers. The union appealed to Nigerians to expect potential inconveniences, framing the action as a fight against “tyranny and indecency.”

Official Procedures for Candidates To ensure clarity, the party outlined the standard process for confirming successful aspirants:
-
The APC will notify successful candidates directly through its established, official communication channels.
-
Certificates of Return will be issued to these candidates only after they have been formally notified.
-
The party has urged members, stakeholders, and the public to disregard any unauthorized reports, emphasizing that such claims are false and should not be treated as official information.
APC Responds to Peter Obi’s Allegations In separate political developments, Dr. George Agbakahi, an APC chieftain in the South-East, has strongly rejected claims by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi that there is a plot to block his candidacy for the 2027 election. Dr. Agbakahi labeled the allegations as “baseless, unfortunate, and politically motivated”.
-
Agbakahi challenged the need for credible evidence, stating that any accusations of executive interference in the electoral process must be supported by verifiable proof.
-
He noted that there is no public evidence suggesting that the Federal Government or the Presidency is attempting to prevent qualified opposition figures from participating in the 2027 race.
-
Addressing concerns regarding the Nigeria Democratic Congress, he clarified that the party’s current legal challenges are the result of internal political disputes rather than government action, and he reminded the public that the Nigerian judiciary remains an independent body where parties can seek legal redress.
