Wike Blasts Peter Obi: “One-Term Pledge Is A Political Suicide”

Published

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticized former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his pledge to serve only one term if elected president, describing such a commitment as misleading and impractical.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Monday, Wike supported the position of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who had earlier dismissed single-term promises as unrealistic.

“It’s very clear,” Wike said. “El-Rufai has already cautioned against telling Nigerians you’ll run for just four years. Circumstances change. How do you sit down and believe a president who says, ‘I will only serve four years’? That’s not correct. Don’t deceive Nigerians with such claims.”

He noted that political realities often shift once leaders assume office, pointing out that even some who initially pledged to step aside have later sought second or third terms.

Wike also questioned Obi’s lack of clarity on the political platform he intends to use for the 2027 election, warning that such uncertainty could mislead his supporters.

“In this era of social media, which party is he running under?” Wike asked. “Is it Labour? Is it PDP? People should know the platform. Atiku has said he will run in ADC, Amaechi has said ADC, but Obi hasn’t said where. Why keep your supporters guessing? He can’t just go where he likes after others have done the work, then come back because he’s seen as a saint.”

The minister further argued that the wave of support Obi enjoyed in the 2023 polls would not automatically carry over to 2027.

“Even if you give him the six million votes back, what happened in 2023 will not be the same,” Wike said, stressing that Nigeria’s political dynamics evolve quickly and cautioning voters not to be swayed by populist promises that may not reflect governance realities.
