JUST IN: Resident Doctors Issue 10-Day Ultimatum To FG, Threaten Total Shutdown Of Hospitals
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a 10-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and relevant authorities to meet its outstanding demands or face an indefinite nationwide strike. According to Nivo News, the warning was contained in a communiqué released on Monday after an Extraordinary National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held virtually on Sunday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The statement, signed by NARD President Dr. Tope Osundara, General Secretary Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku, and Publicity/Social Secretary Omoha Amobi, cautioned that the union would down tools if the government fails to act before September 10, 2025.
The doctors accused the Federal Government of reneging on previous agreements, noting that many resident doctors have yet to receive their 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF). They also cited the non-payment of five months’ arrears arising from the 25%/35% Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) review, as well as other outstanding salary obligations.
NARD further condemned the government’s failure to pay the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance and criticized the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for what it described as the “unjust downgrading” of West African postgraduate membership certificates. The association also decried the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria’s delay in issuing membership certificates to qualified doctors.
The communiqué faulted certain state governments, accusing Kaduna State of refusing to honour agreements with doctors at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, despite previously signed Memoranda of Understanding. It also criticised Oyo State for failing to address welfare issues at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, where doctors are already on indefinite strike.
Despite its grievances, NARD commended governors who have paid the 2025 MRTF, describing it as a sign of commitment to the welfare of health workers.
The association’s fresh demands include immediate payment of the 2025 MRTF to all eligible doctors, settlement of the five months’ CONMESS arrears, prompt payment of the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance, commencement of specialist allowance payments, full implementation of the 2024 CONMESS, recognition of West African postgraduate membership certificates by the MDCN, and timely issuance of certificates by the NPMCN.
“The E-NEC extends the ultimatum by a final 10 days to all relevant government agencies to meet these demands. Failure to do so before Wednesday, September 10, 2025, will leave the NEC with no alternative but to embark on a nationwide strike,” the communiqué stated.
The doctors also urged state governors to prioritise doctors’ welfare, ensure prompt funding for medical training programmes, and adopt proactive measures to stem the exodus of medical professionals from the country.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
