President Tinubu commended the bishop for his lifelong dedication to social justice and advocacy for the underprivileged, emphasizing that his work has significantly shaped discussions on governance and development in Nigeria and across Africa. “Bishop Kukah is a highly revered priest, whose compassion for the poor and underprivileged continues to influence people-centred development policies in Nigeria and Africa,” the President said.
He also highlighted Bishop Kukah’s ability to combine spiritual responsibilities with intellectual engagement, using democracy as a tool to promote good governance. Reflecting on the bishop’s contributions to nation-building, President Tinubu recalled his involvement in pivotal national initiatives aimed at strengthening democracy and fostering unity.
“Bishop Kukah’s role in the struggle for the return of democracy in Nigeria and his support for peace and harmony are remarkable,” the statement noted. The release further highlighted the cleric’s service as a member of Nigeria’s Truth Commission, Secretary of the Political Reform Conference, member of the Electoral Reform Committee, and Chairman of the Inter-religious Dialogue Committee, where he worked diligently to promote harmony between Christians and Muslims.
