Lawmaker Pushes Groundbreaking Bill To Decriminalize Suicide Attempts
The Senator representing Cross River South Senatorial District, Asuquo Ekpenyong, has reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the passage of the Suicide Prevention Bill currently before the National Assembly. The legislation, which passed its first reading in February, seeks to decriminalize attempted suicide and establish a comprehensive framework for prevention, mental health support, and response services across Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Ekpenyong’s renewed dedication was highlighted in a statement issued on Sunday by Prof. Taiwo Sheikh, convener of the Suicide Prevention Advocacy Group and Continental Representative for LifeLine International. The senator reiterated his position while receiving members of the coalition—including psychiatrists, legal experts, civil society groups, and mental health practitioners—during a courtesy visit in Abuja ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 727,000 people die by suicide globally each year, making it the third leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds. Prof. Sheikh emphasized that Nigeria’s law criminalizing attempted suicide aggravates the crisis, noting that about 16,000 deaths are recorded annually, many of which go unreported, particularly among young people.
“The criminalization of attempted suicide stigmatizes already vulnerable individuals. This is a crisis that requires urgent attention,” Sheikh said, adding that the proposed bill would eliminate punitive laws while introducing funding, training, helplines, and data systems to strengthen nationwide prevention and response mechanisms.
Senator Ekpenyong commended the coalition for its persistent advocacy and acknowledged that mental health remains poorly prioritized in Nigeria. “Depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions affect millions of Nigerians, yet they are often misunderstood and neglected. Suicide prevention demands government intervention, education, and awareness,” he said, promising to champion the bill during its second reading with colleagues to ensure “robust debate supported by strong data and evidence.”
Coalition members—including psychiatrists, psychologists, and legal experts—underscored the urgency of passing the legislation, citing the rising youth suicide rate and the socio-economic burden of untreated mental health conditions. Aisha Bubah, Executive Director of the Sunshine Series, warned, “For every recorded suicide, there are at least 20 more attempts. Each delay in passing this bill results in more lives lost.”
The group called on the Federal Government and lawmakers to treat suicide prevention as a public health issue rather than a criminal matter.
