Party In Turmoil: INEC, ADC Clash Rocks Political Circles

Published

on

A leadership crisis has engulfed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) spar over the legitimacy of a new set of executives. INEC has maintained that the ADC has yet to satisfy all legal requirements for the recognition of its newly appointed leaders, while the party insists that due process was strictly observed during the transition.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The standoff began after the resignation of the party’s former National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, along with members of the National Working Committee on July 1. Their exit followed the adoption of the ADC as the platform for an opposition coalition gearing up to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress in 2027. At its 99th National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja on July 29, former Senate President David Mark was inaugurated as National Chairman, and ex-Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola was named National Secretary.

Although Nwosu formally handed over leadership to Mark in the presence of INEC officials, not all party members accepted the transition. Nafiu Bala, the ADC’s 2023 governorship candidate in Gombe State, denounced the change of guard as “an unprecedented assault on democracy” and declared himself interim National Chairman.

Despite the high-profile inauguration, INEC records have yet to be updated. As of Saturday, the commission’s website still listed Nwosu and other previous executives as the party’s recognised officers. INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta-Messi, said the party has not provided the required documentation — including authenticated signatures of interim leaders — necessary to validate the leadership change.

Sadiq Yar’adua, the ADC’s National Secretary of Membership Mobilisation and Registration, countered that the party has fulfilled all obligations and accused INEC of selective enforcement of electoral rules. He alleged that the commission has turned a blind eye to illegal pre-election activities by President Tinubu’s supporters while frustrating opposition parties.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s Publicity Secretary, however, downplayed the controversy, describing the delay as an “administrative issue” that had already been resolved internally.

Insiders disclosed that the party’s initial notification to INEC was improperly signed only by Nwosu and former secretary Said Abdullahi, instead of being co-signed by both outgoing and incoming leaders. The error reportedly slowed down INEC’s verification process, though corrections have now been made. Party sources expressed confidence that the Mark-led executive will soon receive official recognition once the paperwork is fully processed.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
