The leaders warned that the subregion could face severe flood disasters and a potential food crisis unless urgent interventions are undertaken.
Speaking at the conclusion of their 12th meeting in Jalingo, Taraba State, the governors, under the umbrella of the North-East Governors’ Forum, issued a communiqué highlighting the imminent risks. Professor Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State and Chairman of the Forum, noted that credible forecasts point to the possibility of extensive flooding in the coming months.
“The Forum has taken into account credible climate risk forecasts and the threat of flooding across the subregion. We urge proactive measures to address the floods and robust awareness campaigns for communities residing along flood plains,” the communiqué stated.
The governors also called on the Federal Government and the North-East Development Commission to expedite reconstruction of critical infrastructure, particularly bridges destroyed by previous floods.
On agriculture, the Forum expressed concern over the rising cost of farm inputs, warning that this could negatively impact crop yields in the upcoming season. “The Forum decries the escalating cost of agricultural inputs, which could directly affect next year’s farm outputs. To prevent a looming food crisis, we call for increased support for farmers and comprehensive preparation for dry season farming,” the communiqué added.
The governors further announced that the North-East Trade Fair will hold in Maiduguri, Borno State, in December 2025, in collaboration with the North-East Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.
Energy issues were also addressed, with the Forum pledging to accelerate efforts to reduce energy poverty. “The Forum recommits to tackling energy poverty by instructing the Committee on Power and Energy to develop an integrated subregional Power Masterplan,” the communiqué noted.
