Keyamo Sounds Alarm: PDP Risks Political Disaster With Jonathan Or Obi In 2027

Published

on

According to Nivo News, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against considering former President Goodluck Jonathan or ex-Anambra State governor Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, warning that such choices could spell serious political and legal setbacks.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a detailed statement released on Sunday via his X account, Keyamo argued that the PDP remains in what he described as a “non-enviable position” after failing to zone its 2023 presidential ticket to the South—a decision he claimed weakened its base in the South-South and South-East regions.

Keyamo raised a constitutional issue regarding Jonathan’s eligibility, citing Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which he suggested could prevent anyone who has taken the presidential oath of office twice from running again. He warned that fielding Jonathan could expose the PDP to the risk of being left without a candidate if the Supreme Court rules against him after nominations close.

“The amendment was enacted after the 2015 court judgment that cleared Jonathan to contest at the time, so nothing is settled under this new provision,” Keyamo noted. “If he is barred from running and the PDP ends up without a candidate, no one should accuse the judiciary of bias because the party ignored a clear legal danger.”

The minister also dismissed the viability of a South-West flagbearer for the PDP, asserting that other regions would be reluctant to support a fresh Yoruba candidate eligible for two full terms, particularly when competing against the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s entrenched structures in the zone.

On Peter Obi, Keyamo claimed that welcoming the former Labour Party presidential candidate into the PDP would not resolve the opposition party’s problems. He suggested that doubts over Obi’s credibility, coupled with his earlier pledge to serve only one term, could alienate his core supporters. “The principled ones among the ‘Obidients’ will see him as going back to his vomit and may not offer the same level of enthusiasm,” he wrote.

Concluding his assessment, Keyamo blamed what he termed the PDP’s “original sin” of not zoning its 2023 ticket to the South for its current predicament, warning that the party may need to wait until 2031 unless “something extraordinary happens.” The PDP has yet to issue an official response to his remarks.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
