“Sokoto’s Waterways Turn Deadly: Third Boat Accident Claims Two Lives”

NIWA’s Sokoto Area Manager, Bala Bello, told reporters on Friday that two people lost their lives in the mishap, while nine others were rescued. He explained that the accident, which occurred on Friday afternoon, was caused by negligence, canoe overloading, and violations of safety regulations.
Bello added that a combined rescue team, including personnel from NIWA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the Red Cross Society, was deployed to the site. The team confirmed the casualty figures as search and rescue operations continued for missing passengers.
The Area Manager emphasized that NIWA has been actively working with riverine communities to enforce safety guidelines, including the use of life jackets and responsible waterway practices.
This latest tragedy follows two other fatal boat accidents in Sokoto earlier in August. On August 17, four passengers died, 41 were rescued, and five went missing in a boat mishap at Kojiyo Village in Goronyo Local Government Area. A second incident occurred on August 22 in Faji Community, Sabon Birni Local Government Area.
Speaking at the scene, NEMA’s Head of Rescue and Rehabilitation, Tukur Abubakar, confirmed that search operations were ongoing for the missing individual. A local resident, Abubakar Jabbi, said nine people were rescued by local divers, one body was recovered, and a female passenger remains unaccounted for.
