AI To The Rescue: Oyo Unveils Bold Plan To Fix Failing Literacy Rates”

According to Nivo News, the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has stated that education reforms powered by artificial intelligence will be crucial in addressing Nigeria’s worsening learning crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In an interview on Friday, Oyo SUBEB Chairman, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, said the state’s partnership with EIDU, a German education innovation firm, has already produced notable improvements in literacy and numeracy among primary school pupils.

“About a year ago, His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde, entered into a partnership with EIDU to introduce AI-backed teaching methods in four pilot schools. The impact has been remarkable—pupils are acquiring digital literacy skills, teachers are adopting innovative practices, and uniform learning standards now reach children in remote areas as effectively as those in urban communities,” Adeniran explained.

He revealed that the reforms have not only transformed classroom practices but also boosted school enrollment. “In schools where attendance previously ranged from 50 to 70 pupils, the figures have risen to around 100. Learners are eager to attend classes because they don’t want to miss using the digital devices,” he noted.

Adeniran expressed concern about the severity of Nigeria’s learning crisis, citing recent data showing that literacy and numeracy levels remain far below acceptable standards. He referenced the World Bank’s 2023 report, which found that 70 per cent of 10-year-olds in Nigeria cannot read or understand a simple sentence, describing the situation as “learning poverty.” He also cited UNESCO’s 2024 findings that Nigeria accounts for more than 20 per cent of out-of-school children in sub-Saharan Africa.

“This situation is deeply troubling and requires urgent, innovative interventions. Oyo’s AI-backed model demonstrates that technology can bridge gaps and deliver quality education across diverse communities. It is a template other states can and should emulate,” he said.

Adeniran praised Governor Seyi Makinde for significantly increasing the state’s education budget, which enabled the reforms. “When His Excellency assumed office, education received between three and five per cent of the budget. He raised it to 10 per cent and today it exceeds 20 per cent, underscoring his belief that education is the foundation of development,” Adeniran stated.

So far, 1,039 teachers have been trained under the initiative, while an additional 3,090 teachers and 76 quality assurance officers have joined the program. Adeniran said the training has enhanced teachers’ confidence, improved classroom management, and ensured that pupils who require additional support are easily identified through AI-driven performance tracking.

He emphasized that strengthening literacy and numeracy is not only vital for schooling but also for national growth. “Whatever profession you choose, education enhances productivity. A trader with education becomes a better trader, and a craftsman becomes more innovative. This is why building foundational skills is central to national development and empowerment,” he said.

Adeniran further noted that many families struggle to prioritize education due to poverty, cultural and religious factors, and a lack of awareness about its long-term benefits. He urged other states to adopt Oyo’s education model, stressing that the success recorded so far proves that technology-driven reforms can work nationwide.

The Nigerian military has launched a highly effective precision airstrike against a prominent bandit enclave in Dogon Dawa, located along the borders of Niger, Kaduna, and Zamfara states.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to security insiders who briefed Zagazola Makama, the preemptive strike was initiated after intelligence detected a massive convergence of armed bandits preparing to launch coordinated attacks on surrounding communities.

Key Highlights of the Operation:

  • Preemptive Neutralization: The aerial bombardment successfully hit the militant gathering, killing numerous bandits and severely crippling their immediate tactical plans.

  • Logistical Disruption: Post-strike operational intelligence revealed that hundreds of motorcycles were staged at the site, ready to facilitate a large-scale assault across the border axis.

  • Scattered Survivors: A thorough battle damage assessment indicated that the surviving militants—many sustaining severe injuries—fled via the Mangwaro axis into the deep forests between Shadadi and Ma’undu.

Strategic Impact The successful airstrike has shattered the bandits’ local command hierarchy and stripped them of their freedom to maneuver in the region. Security sources noted that this mission highlights a deliberate shift toward intelligence-driven air offensives, aimed at tracking and decimating criminal formations before they can harm civilians.

Furthermore, the operation underscores the strengthening synergy between ground intelligence agencies and the Air Component in neutralizing high-value targets throughout the North-West and North-Central theaters.
