Tragic Turn: N8,000 Dispute Sparks Deadly Violence In Lagos Market

More details have emerged about the violent altercation that resulted in the death of trader Sodiq Ibrahim in the Mandillas area of Lagos Island on Wednesday. According to reports, Ibrahim was allegedly stabbed to death by his colleague, Ebuka Adindu, during a dispute over the division of N8,000. The incident briefly disrupted activities at the busy Balogun Market, with shops closing temporarily before resuming business on Thursday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

While rumours circulated on social media suggesting ethnic tensions were involved, the Lagos State Police Command dismissed such claims. Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that Adindu, from Abia State, stabbed Ibrahim, who was from Kogi State. Adindu reportedly also injured himself during the confrontation and is currently under arrest in a hospital, where he is receiving treatment. Hundeyin stated that investigations will continue and that Adindu will be prosecuted upon discharge.

Investigations revealed that both men were part of a group called Oso Ahia, loosely translated as “market hustlers,” whose role is to bring customers to shops in exchange for a commission. Trouble began when a shop owner handed over N8,000 to be shared between the two after they brought in the same customer. Traders at the market confirmed that the dispute was over the commission and not related to ethnic rivalry.

Eyewitnesses described the escalation: Ibrahim allegedly stabbed Adindu with a bottle, who then retaliated with a knife, resulting in Ibrahim’s death. Traders emphasized that Wednesday’s tragedy was the first violent incident of this kind in recent years at Balogun Market and noted that the temporary closure of shops the following day was due to routine sanitation, not the incident itself.
