PDP Breaks Silence On 2027: Why The South Got The Presidential Ticket
According to Nivo News, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, effectively shutting out the possibility of a northern candidate representing the party in the next general election. The decision was reached during the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday at its national headquarters in Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Party insiders disclosed that the move is aimed at easing internal tension and preventing fresh divisions ahead of the polls. A NEC member explained that the presidency was zoned to the South to maintain balance in the party’s leadership, noting that both the national chairman and presidential candidate could not reasonably emerge from the same region. Stakeholders also agreed that, after eight years under former President Muhammadu Buhari, zoning the presidency back to the North would be unfair.
Another source revealed that the arrangement is expected to discourage current members of the National Working Committee (NWC) from seeking re-election to their posts. Party officials added that the decision aligns with public sentiment, stressing that “even the mood of Nigerians clearly favours a southern presidency.”
The PDP’s zoning debate is rooted in its 2023 presidential primaries. Before that election, a committee led by former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom opted to throw the ticket open, paving the way for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to secure the nomination. That decision fractured the party and led to the emergence of the G-5 governors—Nyesom Wike of Rivers (now FCT Minister), Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Ortom, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu—who openly opposed Atiku’s candidacy.
In a bid to mend the rift, the PDP set up another zoning panel on August 14 chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri. The committee recommended retaining the existing rotational arrangement, a proposal that NEC formally adopted on Monday. This decision cements the South as the party’s power base going into the 2027 presidential race.
