The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted and seized a total of 2.318 tons of cannabis in separate operations across Kwara State within the past week.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Fatima Popoola, the state commander of the agency, made the disclosure on Tuesday during a press briefing in Ilorin, the state capital. She explained that the seizures occurred during raids conducted between 3 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. along the Offa and Omu-Aran corridors.

Four individuals were apprehended after attempting to conceal the drugs in Canter trucks and sacks of sawdust to avoid detection. Popoola described the seizures as “one of the largest in recent weeks,” with a street value estimated to run into billions of naira.

She provided a breakdown of the haul, noting that one suspect was found with 1.2 tons, another with 300 kilograms, and two others linked to a 720-kilogram seizure. In one instance, a J5 vehicle initially believed to be empty was later discovered to be fully loaded with cannabis.

The NDLEA commander emphasized that drug abuse has been a driving factor behind violent crimes in several parts of Kwara, including Kaiama, Chikanda, Patigi, Edu, and Omu-Aran. She also highlighted that while only two tons of drugs were seized in 2024, more than 2,000 kilograms have already been intercepted between January and August 2025.

Popoola attributed the recent successes to enhanced collaboration with the police, army, civil defence, and traditional leaders.

Representing the state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Special Adviser Saadu Salahu commended the agency’s efforts. He stated that the government is working closely with community leaders, religious institutions, and civil society groups to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and actively support initiatives to combat drug trafficking.
