POWA Contributions Are Voluntary, Police Insist Amid Controversy

According to Nivo News, the Lagos State Police Command has dismissed a report alleging that senior officers were directed to pay ₦6,000 each as “2025 POWA dues” to an association linked to the wife of the Inspector-General of Police.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued on Monday, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, described the claim as “malicious, false, unfounded, and purely imaginary,” clarifying that no such directive was ever issued.

Hundeyin explained that the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) is a non-governmental organisation established to improve the welfare of police families, including widows and children of officers who died in active service. He stressed that POWA is solely funded through voluntary dues and donations from police officers, not through compulsory levies tied to the IGP’s wife or office.

He further noted that dues, where applicable, are paid only by senior officers from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police and above and are deposited into a POWA account domiciled in Lagos for the direct benefit of members within the state. “The funds are not remitted to the POWA President or her office in Abuja,” he added.

The Command urged the public to disregard the false report and called on media outlets to verify information before publication to avoid misleading the public or maligning individuals working to support police families.
