According to the statement, the decision was based on reports from the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, working in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee, which confirmed that the crescent moon was not sighted anywhere in the country on Saturday, August 23, 2025, corresponding to the 29th day of Safar 1447 AH. Consequently, Sunday, August 24, 2025, will complete the 30th day of Safar, making Monday the official start of Rabi’ul Awwal 1447 AH.

Meanwhile, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has criticized a proposed bill in the Senate seeking to designate the Ooni of Ife and the Sultan of Sokoto as permanent co-chairmen of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria. The group warned that such legislation marginalizes other ethnic nationalities and undermines the principles of fairness and equity.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze described the bill—which has already passed its second reading—as discriminatory, ethnocentric, and unjust. The organization said it was “astounded” by the rationale behind the proposal, accusing the Senate of disregarding the principles of justice, equity, and federal character as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
