The initiative is designed to accelerate the growth of Nigeria’s creative industry—spanning film, music, fashion, and content creation—by providing real-time, data-driven insights to guide policymakers, investors, and industry stakeholders.

Speaking at the launch event in Lagos on Thursday, Oyinkansola Akintola-Bello, Director of the UK–Nigeria Tech Hub, said the platform covers seven states across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones—Lagos, Kano, Cross River, Anambra, Kwara, Plateau, and Adamawa—offering region-specific performance data. She noted that mapping the creative landscape will help identify gaps, growth opportunities, and areas requiring targeted interventions to drive investment and innovation.

Akintola-Bello added that the tracker would stimulate employment and enhance innovation in Nigeria’s creative sector while aligning with broader efforts to strengthen the digital economy in Nigeria and partner countries including Kenya, South Africa, Indonesia, and Brazil.

Micheal John, senior partner at Avaara Partners and former country manager of Tech4Dev, explained that the Creative Economy Tracker is an open-source platform accessible to anyone seeking reliable data for policy design, investment planning, or industry development. He further revealed that the platform concludes the Nigeria Creative Growth and Innovation Initiative, a research project that examined how value is generated across the entire creative industry value chain—from idea development to production, distribution, and monetization.

John highlighted that the study shed light on the challenges and opportunities facing creators. He emphasized the need to understand how talents acquire skills, conceptualize ideas, transform them into products, distribute them effectively, collect revenue, and recruit skilled personnel. “Afrobeats is now among the top five music genres consumed globally,” he said, “but we wanted to assess what that success means for the average creator on the ground and where the bottlenecks still exist.”
