Tottenham Shocks Manchester City With Another Stunning 2-0 Triumph At Etihad
Tottenham Hotspur maintained their strong start to the Premier League season with a commanding 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on August 23, securing back-to-back wins under new manager Thomas Frank. The result mirrored last November’s 4-0 triumph over the same opponents, as Spurs once again combined disciplined defending with clinical finishing to frustrate Pep Guardiola’s side.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Manchester City began the match brightly, with Omar Marmoush posing an early threat. The Egyptian forward forced sharp saves from Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on two occasions, while Erling Haaland also set him up with a clear chance on goal.
Despite City’s early dominance, Tottenham opened the scoring when Richarlison broke free on the right and delivered a low cross that Brennan Johnson converted from close range. The goal, initially disallowed for offside, was later confirmed following a VAR review. Spurs doubled their advantage just before halftime, capitalising on a poor clearance from City goalkeeper James Trafford. The ball fell to Joao Palhinha, who fired home his first goal since joining on loan from Bayern Munich.
Trafford’s nervy performance included a risky collision with Mohammed Kudus near the edge of the area, sparking debate over whether a red card was warranted. Haaland also missed City’s best opportunity of the half, heading over from close range. After the break, Tottenham held firm to secure a second consecutive clean sheet this season.
In the closing stages, Spurs nearly extended their lead further, with Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert both thwarted by Trafford, but the visitors ultimately saw out the match comfortably.
The victory capped a turbulent week for Tottenham, who were left disappointed after transfer target Eberechi Eze opted to join rivals Arsenal. Early chants of frustration from travelling Spurs supporters directed at chairman Daniel Levy gave way to celebration by the final whistle.
For Guardiola, the defeat reinforced Tottenham’s status as a bogey side. The Spanish coach has now suffered ten losses against Spurs, second only to his record against Real Madrid and Liverpool.
The result also raises questions over Manchester City’s goalkeeping situation. With Ederson linked to a move to Galatasaray and Trafford’s performance under scrutiny, Guardiola faces an important decision ahead of the team’s trip to Brighton next Sunday. Tottenham will aim to build on their momentum when they host Bournemouth on Saturday.
