“We Fell Short”: D’Tigers Coach And Star Guard Break Silence After AfroBasket Crash
Nigeria’s AfroBasket 2025 campaign ended in disappointment as D’Tigers were knocked out in the quarter-finals, falling 91-75 to Senegal in Angola.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
For head coach Mohammed Abdulrahman and captain Ike Nwamu, the defeat reflected missed opportunities rather than a lack of effort.
“On a night when we needed our A-game, we fell short,” Abdulrahman said after the game. “I won’t take anything away from Senegal — they earned it. I’m proud of our players because we’ve established an identity, and this is only the beginning.”
According to reports, Senegal’s Brancou Badio and Jean Jacques Boissy combined to propel the Teranga Lions to their fifth straight AfroBasket semi-final since 2013.
Nwamu described the loss as painful, particularly given Nigeria’s strong start to the tournament.
“It hurts. We had high hopes, we had a great group that enjoyed playing together, but that’s basketball — one team wins, another loses. Today wasn’t our day. They came out with more energy while we were a bit flat at the start. They’re a very good team with plenty of high-level talent,” he said.
D’Tigers had raised expectations early in the competition by topping Group B with victories over Madagascar, Tunisia, and Cameroon. However, they struggled to reproduce that form against a battle-tested Senegalese side when it mattered most.
Back home, the National Sports Commission (NSC) threw its weight behind the team despite the quarter-final exit. In a statement, the NSC commended D’Tigers for their “resilience, talent, and passion,” assuring supporters that this campaign would serve as a platform for even greater success in future tournaments
