Top Politicians Under Watch As DSS, NIA Hunt Terror Sponsors – CDS

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has confirmed that Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies are intensifying efforts to identify and prosecute terrorism financiers, though the process remains complex due to legal hurdles and international financial networks.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, Musa explained that many of the financiers operate across borders, making it difficult to track and prosecute them solely within Nigeria. Speaking on Thursday, he noted that while some funding originates from outside the country, local collaborators often help sustain the flow of resources to criminal groups.

“The process is ongoing,” Musa said. “Because of legal issues and international connections, we have to be careful. Some funds come from abroad, and the local ones usually employ individuals who collect money daily and remit it into certain accounts. These are being closely tracked.”

The defence chief commended the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) for exposing financial links to terrorist networks and assisting in recent arrests. He revealed that the Attorney-General of the Federation, the National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and key security agencies—including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA)—are working together to dismantle these funding channels.

Musa also cautioned that some political actors may be complicit in fueling insecurity ahead of the 2027 elections. “Criminals work together; terrorists and bandits collaborate because they share the same goal: to make money and destabilise communities. Unfortunately, some politicians may also be involved. When there’s peace, it shows government is performing well; when there’s unrest, it creates the opposite impression. Why would anyone want to destroy the people they hope to govern?” he questioned.

While confirming that some suspects have been identified, Musa said investigations were still ongoing. He further called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s legal framework to speed up the prosecution of terrorism cases, suggesting the establishment of special courts to handle such matters efficiently.

“The DSS, NIA, NFIU, and Defence Intelligence Agency are all working assiduously,” Musa stated. “But we need to review our legal system because prosecutions take too long, and punishments may no longer serve as deterrents. A dedicated court for terrorism cases would help ensure swift justice.”
