Judge Strikes Down Texas Classroom Ten Commandments Mandate
A U.S. federal judge has halted a Texas law requiring public schools to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, District Judge Fred Biery issued a preliminary injunction on Wednesday, stopping the measure from taking effect on September 1. The law, known as Senate Bill 10, was challenged by families of diverse faiths with children in Texas public schools.
In his 55-page ruling, Judge Biery declared the law unconstitutional, stating that it “impermissibly takes sides on theological questions and officially favors Christian denominations over others.” He added that forcing such displays would likely send “an exclusionary and spiritually burdensome message” to students who do not share the approved version of the Ten Commandments, making them feel like “outsiders in their own school community.”
Rabbi Mara Nathan, one of the plaintiffs, praised the decision, saying, “Children’s religious beliefs should be nurtured by parents and faith communities, not dictated by politicians or public schools.” Rachel Laser, president of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, also commended the ruling, calling it “a strong and resounding message across the country that government must respect every student’s religious freedom.”
The ruling comes after a similar decision in November, when a federal judge blocked a Louisiana law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in classrooms. In that case, Judge John deGravelles found the measure violated the First Amendment, which bars the government from establishing a religion or favoring one faith over another.
The U.S. Supreme Court has previously weighed in on similar matters. In 1980, it ruled that displaying the Ten Commandments in Kentucky schools was unconstitutional. Meanwhile, legal disputes continue in states such as Oklahoma, where education officials recently ordered public schools to teach the Bible — a directive now under challenge.
