“High-Stakes Peace Mission: Yoruba Leaders Race To End Monarchs’ Feud”
Prominent Yoruba elders and leaders have called for restraint and urgent intervention following renewed hostilities between the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi. According to Nivo News, tensions resurfaced on Monday after the Alaafin faulted the Ooni’s decision to confer the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on businessman Chief Dotun Sanusi during the unveiling of an indigenous social media and business platform at Ilaji Hotel, Ibadan, over the weekend.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement issued through his media aide, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin insisted that no monarch other than himself holds the authority to bestow a title with pan-Yoruba significance, issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni to withdraw the title or “face the consequences.” In response, Ooni’s spokesperson, Moses Olafare, dismissed the threat, stating the palace would “leave the matter in the court of public opinion,” urging focus on unity rather than divisive rhetoric.
Monday’s exchange marks the latest in a series of public disputes between the two foremost Yoruba monarchs. Previous incidents, including viral videos from May and June showing signs of coldness between them, have fueled concerns about a growing rift despite denials from both palaces.
Speaking on Tuesday, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, said he has begun reaching out to prominent Yoruba leaders to mediate, stressing that the feud must not undermine the unity of Yorubaland. Adams described both monarchs as “fathers” and pledged personal intervention to ensure the conflict is resolved amicably.
The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) also urged both royal fathers to avoid actions contrary to Omoluabi values. Secretary-General Oladipo Oyewole appealed to the governments of Osun and Oyo States to step in, warning that unresolved disputes could damage cultural heritage. Similarly, world-renowned Ifa scholar and former Senate Leader, Prof. Wande Abimbola, called for calm, revealing that plans are underway for a high-level meeting of Yoruba elders and traditional rulers to seek a peaceful settlement.
Meanwhile, the President of Ibadan Mogajis, Asimiyu Ariori, and the Coordinator of the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative, Nurudeen Akinade, criticized the Alaafin’s ultimatum, describing it as “irrational and divisive,” and warned against provoking tensions in Ibadan.
Pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere also weighed in, backing the Ooni’s authority as spiritual head of the Yoruba nation. Organising Secretary Abagun Omololu traced the roots of the dispute to British colonial restructuring, which fragmented Yorubaland into provinces, while affirming the Ooni’s ancestral primacy as custodian of Yoruba heritage. Legal practitioner Pelumi Olajengbesi also defended the Ooni’s conferment of the title on Sanusi, stating there is no legal or historical basis to suggest the Alaafin holds exclusive authority over pan-Yoruba titles.
Several monarchs approached for comment declined to speak publicly on the matter, even as calls grow louder for swift intervention to prevent further escalation.

A Disguise for Crime: While many operate as ordinary waste pickers by day, concerns are rising that some use the title as a cover to burglarize homes, pick pockets, rob residents, vandalize government assets, and harass citizens in gangs.
-
Suburbs Under Pressure: Communities like Nyanya, Karu, Jikwoyi, Mararaba, and Masaka have experienced an influx of scavengers, with locals noting that porous borders and lax security are turning Abuja into a hotspot for crime and kidnappings.
-
Victim Accounts: Residents like Mama Amina and Ifeanyi Ike report nighttime break-ins and point out that a lack of structured domestic waste disposal systems inadvertently empowers criminals operating under the guise of scavenging. Meanwhile, Suleman Danladi attributes the growth of the sector partly to displaced farmers fleeing northern insurgencies.
-
The Scavengers’ Perspective: Conversely, workers like Ibrahim Dantata maintain that the job is a means of economic survival to feed their families amid scarce employment opportunities, while Adamu notes that their internal groups occasionally punish members caught stealing.
-
Expert Recommendations: Security expert Mr. Ndu Nwokolo warns that unmonitored scavenging exposes communities to hooliganism, knife attacks, and surveillance. He urges the FCT Administration to enforce bans on indiscriminate refuse disposal, restrict scavenging, and redirect these youths into skills acquisition programs while fixing the city’s waste management framework.

Semi Ajayi has also returned to the Premier League after helping Hull City secure promotion, starting in their play-off final victory over Middlesbrough. Ajayi, who previously made 33 appearances for West Bromwich Albion during the 2020/21 campaign, brings valuable top-flight experience to Hull City’s squad. Fellow newcomer David Akintola also joins the Premier League at age 30 following stints across Denmark, Norway, Cyprus, and Turkey.
Brighton teenager Zadok Yohanna joins the English top flight after signing a five-year contract from Swedish club AIK following an impressive run of goals and assists. Meanwhile, Brentford has included Super Eagles centre-back Benjamin Fredrick in their first-team squad after he signed a new four-year contract extension in July.
Established names like Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Ola Aina return as core figures for their respective clubs. Iwobi, who recently earned his 100th cap for Nigeria, joins Bassey as Fulham prepares to host Chelsea. Aina continues to anchor Nottingham Forest’s defense following a contract extension through 2028, and Chuba Akpom returns to the Premier League with Ipswich Town after finishing as the Championship’s top scorer during their promotion campaign.
