In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, through a circular issued by the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, stated that the holiday underscores the state government’s cultural policy and commitment to preserving Yoruba heritage. The notice confirmed that work will resume on Thursday, August 21.

The Ogun State Government also announced the holiday, with Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, recalling that Isese Day was first officially recognized in 2023 following a resolution by the State House of Assembly. Akinmade explained that the festival provides adherents of the Yoruba religion an opportunity to honor their ancestors, practice traditional rites, and share the values of their faith with the wider society.

In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde approved the holiday to allow traditional religion worshippers and other residents to participate in the celebrations. According to Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, Makinde urged citizens to use the day to pray for peace, unity, and stability in the state and across Nigeria.

Osun State also declared a public holiday, with the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Abdul Rasheed Aderibigbe, stating that Governor Ademola Adeleke’s decision reflects his commitment to recognizing the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. Adeleke congratulated traditional religion practitioners and wished them a peaceful and memorable festival.

With Isese Day now officially observed in several South-West states, the festival continues to serve as a symbol of Yoruba cultural pride and inclusivity, sparking renewed calls for broader recognition across the country.

This call was issued through a 10-point communiqué following a three-day Ministers of the Gospel Conference held at the CAN Secretariat along FGGC Road in Jalingo. The gathering, themed “The Roles of the Church and the State in Advancing God’s Purpose in a Changing World,” brought together diverse leaders, including bishops, pastors, traditional rulers, politicians, and delegates from across the state’s 16 local government areas and two development areas.

Key Highlights from the Communiqué

  • Complementary Roles: Signed by Taraba CAN Chairman Rev. Fr. Williams P. Awoshiri and Conference Working Committee Chairman Bishop (Dr.) Innocent R. Solomon, the document emphasizes that the church and government hold distinct yet mutually supportive responsibilities in nation-building, with the church focusing on moral guidance and human dignity, and the government handling security and infrastructure.

  • Leadership and Governance: Christian political officeholders were urged to treat their positions as avenues for service rather than personal gain, mirroring biblical figures of integrity. Meanwhile, churches were encouraged to provide moral leadership without getting entangled in partisan politics.

  • Church-State Relations & Traditional Institutions: CAN stressed the importance of mutual respect, constitutional independence, and constructive collaboration, suggesting that churches expand their support in areas like education and healthcare while retaining the right to speak truth to power. The association also called for traditional rulers to be actively involved in grassroots policymaking.

  • Unity and Conflict Resolution: Acknowledging Taraba’s multi-ethnic landscape, CAN urged church leaders to bridge denominational divides and take active roles in early-intervention peacebuilding and traditional dispute resolution to forestall communal conflicts.
