Saudi Security Arrests Kano Woman Over Alleged Drug Smuggling

Published

on

Saudi authorities have arrested and detained a Nigerian woman, Maryam Hussaini-Abdullahi, after a bag allegedly containing marijuana was reportedly linked to her name during her pilgrimage trip. According to reports, the incident stemmed from a luggage mix-up involving Ethiopian Airlines.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Mrs. Abdullahi left Nigeria on August 6 with her husband, Abdullahi Baffa, to perform the lesser Hajj. Upon arrival in Jeddah, the couple’s luggage could not be traced, prompting them to lodge a complaint with the airline. Eight days later, they were informed that one of the bags was ready for collection in Jeddah, but Baffa declined and asked for it to be returned to Nigeria.

The situation escalated when, while preparing to return to Nigeria, Saudi immigration officials blocked Mrs. Abdullahi from boarding and referred the couple to the Rihab Centre in Makkah for investigation. Security operatives later informed them that a “Ghana must go” sack containing suspicious items had been tagged with her name.

Baffa insists that the bag does not belong to them and accuses the airline of wrongful tagging. He said the luggage numbers on their tickets did not match the impounded bag, despite Saudi police attaching his wife’s photograph to it. “My wife is completely innocent,” he maintained, adding that operatives nonetheless detained her pending further investigation.

The Nigerian Consulate in Madinah has confirmed awareness of the case, with Consul General Muazam Nayaya stating that an investigation has commenced and a report will be forwarded to headquarters. A source within Ethiopian Airlines also said the matter is under review but stressed that such inquiries take time because multiple airports are involved.

Baffa has appealed to the Nigerian government to secure his wife’s release and urged Aminu Kano International Airport to release CCTV footage of their departure, alleging criminal tampering with passenger luggage. The incident has drawn comparisons to the 2018 case of Zainab Aliyu, a Nigerian student falsely implicated in drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia after a criminal gang planted illicit substances in her luggage.
