Jerry Omatsogunwa, a media aide to the governor, said residents were eagerly awaiting Fubara’s resumption to continue projects initiated before his suspension. “Expectations for the governor’s return are very high. He had been performing excellently as head of the state government,” Omatsogunwa stated, noting major initiatives such as the multi-billion-naira Port Harcourt Ring Road project spanning several local government areas.

He added that citizens were optimistic the governor would quickly revive and accelerate projects like the Omoku-Elele Road, the Trans-Kalabari Road, and other key infrastructure works to ensure timely delivery. “From August 18, the countdown for the return of the most loved governor in Rivers State will officially begin,” Omatsogunwa said.

President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly amid a protracted political standoff between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed Sole Administrator to stabilise the state’s governance.

Five months into his tenure, Ibas has reiterated his commitment to leaving office at the end of the emergency period. Through his Senior Special Adviser on Media, Hector Igbikiowubo, Ibas said ongoing projects—including the new State House of Assembly complex—remain on track, with contractors working according to agreed specifications.

He emphasised that state funding priorities were being met and assured that his administration was not seeking to prolong its stay. “We are firmly committed to exiting office, which is why the National Assembly approved preparations for local government elections to restore democracy at that level. The budget has been approved, and funding for key projects continues,” Ibas affirmed.
