The report shows that food inflation stood at 22.74% year-on-year in July 2025, marking a sharp 16.79 percentage point drop from the 39.53% recorded in July 2024. Officials explained that this apparent decline is largely the result of a base-year revision rather than a dramatic fall in actual food prices.
On a month-to-month basis, food inflation slowed to 3.12% in July, compared to 3.25% in June, driven by softer prices in items such as vegetable oil, white beans, local rice, maize, flour, guinea corn, and wheat.
Meanwhile, the headline inflation rate on a year-on-year basis was 11.52% lower than in July 2024, when it stood at 33.40%, reflecting the recalibrated statistical base year of November 2009 = 100. However, monthly inflation rose to 1.99% in July 2025, slightly above the 1.68% rate in June, indicating that the average price level continued to increase at a faster pace.
Economic observers note that while the downward shift in annual figures suggests some statistical relief, the persistent monthly rise in prices underscores the need for deeper reforms to curb inflation sustainably.
