The former Finance Minister noted that while the reforms have brought much-needed stability, the next priority should be to accelerate economic growth and provide social safety nets for vulnerable Nigerians affected by the adjustment measures.
“We believe the President and his team have worked hard to stabilize the economy,” she said. “You cannot improve an economy unless it is stable, so he deserves credit for that. The reforms have gone in the right direction. What is needed next is growth — and we must ensure that people feeling the pinch of these reforms receive support to help them through the hardship. That’s the next step.”
The meeting between Tinubu and Okonjo-Iweala came just two weeks before the expiration of her first term as WTO Director-General on August 31, 2025, and ahead of the start of her second term on September 1, 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 29, titled “My Stance on Road Development,” Obi argued that Nigeria’s limited funds should be directed toward fixing failing highways that provide essential connectivity rather than starting new ventures with minimal immediate utility.
-
Obi highlighted the Asaba-Benin Road as a critical example, noting that it serves as a vital corridor for travelers from several states across the South-East, South-South, and North-Central moving toward Lagos.

-
Obi concluded that this strategic approach to infrastructure would facilitate the movement of goods and people, ultimately fostering economic growth and contributing to what he refers to as a “new Nigeria”.
