Sudan Stuns Nigeria! Home-Based Eagles Crash Out Of CHAN In Zanzibar
Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles have crashed out of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Sudan in their second Group D fixture in Zanzibar on Tuesday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Having already lost 1-0 to Senegal in their opening match, the Nigerian side entered the game under pressure but were completely outplayed by a Sudanese team that combined physical strength with incisive attacking play. The result leaves Nigeria bottom of the group with no points, a minus-five goal difference, and no mathematical path to progress.
Sudan seized control early, pressing high and forcing errors in Nigeria’s defensive third. The breakthrough came in the 25th minute when defender Leonard Ngenge, under pressure, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net after Abdel Raouf Yagoub had struck the post moments earlier.
Nigeria’s troubles deepened before halftime when a handball by Ngenge gifted Sudan a penalty. Walieldin Khdir converted with a powerful strike into the top corner to double the lead. Nigeria almost responded in first-half stoppage time, but Sikiru Alimi headed narrowly wide from close range.
The second half brought no respite. Yagoub, a constant menace, scored twice in quick succession — first with a composed left-footed finish in the 55th minute following Musa Hussien’s cutback, then with a thunderous right-footed effort just seven minutes later.
From that point, Sudan managed the game expertly, frustrating Nigeria’s efforts to create chances. Raymond Tochukwu hit the post late on, but Sudanese goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja stood firm to preserve the clean sheet.
With four points from two matches, Sudan are now well positioned to qualify for the knockout stages. For Nigeria, runners-up in 2018, the elimination is a bitter setback, highlighting defensive lapses and a lack of cutting edge in attack.
