Nigerian Jurist Olufemi Elias Tipped For Prestigious ICJ Role
According to Nivo News, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government has nominated renowned jurist Olufemi Elias for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The ICJ, the UN’s principal judicial organ, comprises 15 judges serving nine-year terms, with one-third of the seats contested every three years. The upcoming election will fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Somali judge Abdulqawi Ahmed, effective September 30.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, formally endorsed Elias in a video statement, citing his exceptional record in international law and diplomacy. Tuggar described Elias as one of the most respected legal minds in the global arena, with decades of scholarship, service, and an unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and the rule of law.
He emphasized that Elias’ distinguished career embodies the principles on which the ICJ was established, reflecting Nigeria’s firm support for a rules-based international order where peace is safeguarded and all nations—regardless of size or power—have an equal voice. Tuggar urged the international community to back Elias’ candidacy, expressing confidence that his election would enhance the cause of global justice and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
Elias currently serves as an ad hoc judge at the ICJ. His father, Taslim Elias, also held prominent roles at the court, serving as judge from 1976 to 1991, vice-president from 1979 to 1982, and president from 1982 to 1985.
