From Champions to Legends: Wakama Unveils Masterplan for D’Tigress Supremacy

The Nigerian side clinched their seventh AfroBasket title—their fifth consecutive championship—after overpowering Mali 78–64 in Sunday’s final, extending their unbeaten run in the tournament to an astonishing 29 games.
The victory also secured Nigeria a coveted spot at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
When asked how long the D’Tigress could maintain their supremacy, Wakama responded:
“Hopefully for a very long time. It’s hard to put a number on it, but we want to keep going.”
She praised her team’s exceptional mental resilience, noting that Nigeria had just six training sessions before their opening match, while other teams had months to prepare.
“This was a mental tournament. We chose not to complain. We stayed mentally strong, and I’m proud of the team,” Wakama said.
Ahead of the final, she motivated her players to embrace the weight of national pride.
“I told them, ‘Win this not just for yourselves, but for Nigeria. We’re playing for something bigger. We’re building a legacy.’”
Wakama, who made history in 2023 as the first female coach to win the AfroBasket, has now set another record by becoming the first woman to lead a team to back-to-back titles. She credited her assistant, Wani Muganguzi, for his pivotal support.
“Wani is like my brother. He’s a brilliant coach in France, and we share the same values—God, family, and women’s empowerment. It’s easy to work with someone who aligns with your vision. Behind every successful team is a great coaching staff.”
She also reflected on her tactical decisions in the final, especially the strategic use of veteran center Murjanatu Musa to counter Mali’s intensity.
“Mali are fast, disciplined, and physical. We told the girls to shut down their transition play and protect the paint. Musa is a warrior. She struggled early, but I believed in her, and she delivered.”
