Final arrangements have been made for the Olubadan-in-Council to convene today at the newly completed Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan, to deliberate on the succession process following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to reports, the meeting—officially notified last Thursday—is expected to formally declare the stool vacant and commence the nomination of a new monarch, in accordance with Ibadan’s well-established traditional succession protocol.

Barring any last-minute developments, former Oyo State Governor and Otun Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who is next in line, is poised to be nominated as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Traditionally, one council member will nominate the next king, with another seconding the motion after a brief discussion. The nominee’s name will then be submitted to Governor Seyi Makinde via the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters for official approval.

As of the time of reporting, it remained uncertain whether Oba Ladoja—who has been out of Oyo State since Oba Olakulehin’s passing—would be present at today’s meeting. Sources told The Nation that Ladoja may delay his return to avoid overshadowing the burial ceremonies of the late monarch.

A palace source confirmed that Ladoja is keen not to let the anticipation surrounding his expected nomination eclipse the solemn farewell to Oba Olakulehin.

Oba Olakulehin, who died on July 7 after barely a year on the throne as the 43rd Olubadan, will be buried on Friday at the Cathedral of Saint Peter’s, Aremo, Ibadan. Burial rites kick off today with a series of sporting events.

Confirming the council’s gathering, the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, said the meeting would proceed as scheduled at the newly inaugurated Olubadan Palace—marking the first time a nomination of this magnitude will be held there.

The council’s meeting comes a week after the conclusion of the 21-day mourning period for Oba Olakulehin, who succeeded Oba Mohood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
