NiMet Sounds Alarm: Nigeria to Be Hit by Widespread Storms, Raging Rains and Floods

In a weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet outlined expected rainfall patterns across the northern, central, and southern regions and urged citizens to take necessary precautions for safety.
Northern Region: Thunderstorms and Rising Flood Risk
On Monday morning, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States.
NiMet noted that these weather conditions would likely intensify by the afternoon and evening across the entire northern region.
The agency specifically flagged Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi States as high-risk areas for flooding during the forecast period.
Tuesday and Wednesday are projected to bring continued thunderstorm activity in northern states including Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Adamawa.
Central Region: Intermittent Rains Across FCT and Surrounding States
Light rain is expected on Monday morning in Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa, with rainfall extending into the afternoon and evening in Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and FCT.
These rainy conditions are forecast to persist through Tuesday and Wednesday, with widespread showers anticipated across the same areas.
Southern Region: Cloud Cover, Persistent Showers, and Flood Threats
In the southern region, cloudy skies with chances of light rain are expected on Monday morning across Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States.
Rainfall is expected to intensify by afternoon, spreading to Osun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, and more coastal areas. NiMet has issued a high flood alert for Oyo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta States.
By midweek, southern states will continue to experience intermittent light rain, with particular flood warnings for Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom—especially Bayelsa State.
NiMet Issues Safety Guidelines
NiMet urged the public to avoid driving in heavy rainfall, activate emergency response plans in high-risk areas, and dress warmly during cooler nights.
Residents are also advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under tall trees, and disconnect electronic devices to guard against lightning and power surges.
Airline operators have been instructed to obtain airport-specific weather updates from NiMet to ensure safe flight operations.
