Power Nightmare: Enugu Suffers Major Outage After EEDC Reduces Supply

In a public announcement issued on Monday, the company disclosed that the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission recently released a new tariff order, which slashed the rate for Band A customers from N209.50/kWh to N160.40/kWh. This change, according to Mainpower, has directly impacted energy supply from its parent company, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
“As a result of this tariff reduction, there has been a sharp decline in the energy allocation to us from EEDC,” the statement read. “We wish to inform our valued customers in parts of Enugu State who have been experiencing power outages in the last four days that this disruption is tied to the reduced energy allocation.”
Mainpower explained that EEDC’s decision to limit electricity supply followed a financial analysis of the new tariff regime, which projected losses exceeding N1 billion monthly. Faced with this shortfall, EEDC opted to cut the volume of electricity distributed to its subsidiaries, including Mainpower.
“To cushion the impact of the projected losses and ensure sustainability, EEDC made the tough decision to reduce energy supply to us,” Mainpower said.
The company expressed regret over the situation and apologised for the disruption, assuring customers that it is in active talks with both state and federal authorities to find a solution.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and assure our esteemed customers that discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders to resolve the issue promptly. We are optimistic that normal supply will resume within 48 hours or shortly thereafter,” the statement added.
Mainpower also acknowledged the delay in informing the public, citing the short notice at which it received full details of the development.
“We recognise that this update is coming later than it should have. The delay was due to the short timeframe within which we received comprehensive information about the situation,” the company noted. “We appeal for your continued patience and understanding as we work tirelessly to restore normalcy.”
