Miracle Birth: Baby Born from 30-Year-Old Frozen Embryo Stuns World

Named Thaddeus Daniel Pierce, the infant was born on July 26 to Lindsey and Tim Pierce of London, Ohio, through an adopted IVF process. His embryo had been preserved in cryogenic storage since May 1994, according to an exclusive by MIT Technology Review.
Lindsey remarked that her husband Tim, now 35, was just a toddler when Thaddeus’s embryo was first created. “The baby even has a 30-year-old sister,” she added, referring to a biological daughter born from the same batch of embryos back in 1994.
The Pierces were astonished to learn that embryo adoption was possible and that embryos could remain viable after such a long time.
“We thought it was wild. We didn’t even know they froze embryos that far back,” Lindsey said. “We weren’t trying to break records — we just wanted to have a baby.”
The couple traveled from Ohio to Tennessee to complete the IVF process.
The embryo originated from Lydia Archerd, now 62, who had frozen four embryos with her then-husband in the early 1990s following fertility struggles. One of the embryos led to the birth of a daughter in 1994 via a surrogate named Linda. That daughter is now 30 and has a child of her own.
Although Archerd and her husband later divorced and never had more children, she continued paying $1,000 annually to keep the remaining embryos frozen.
“I always wanted another baby desperately,” Archerd said.
Eventually, after reaching menopause, she decided to donate the embryos through Nightlight Christian Adoptions‘ embryo adoption programme — which connects donors with prospective families.
Archerd expressed excitement at the prospect of meeting Thaddeus and noted that he already bears a resemblance to her daughter.
While Lindsey and Tim Pierce are Thaddeus’s legal and birth parents, his genetic origins trace back to another couple whose relationship ended decades ago — making his story all the more unique.
Despite Thaddeus’s record-breaking status, numerous children have been born from long-preserved embryos, often for reasons ranging from family planning changes to divorce. In Archerd’s case, she had hoped to use all four embryos, but her then-husband opposed having more children.

Friday, August 7, 2026: After a morning departure from his residence, a requiem mass will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Oba-Ile. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at 12:45 p.m. at Labaluyegbe Villa, followed by a reception at Aderonmu Grammar School Field.
The Bangbola Oyewo family of the Ese-Ola Royal House remembered him as a beloved family man, traditional leader, and an inspiration to generations of theatre practitioners.
