NiMet Sounds Alarm: Thunderstorms, Flooding to Disrupt Activities Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday through Wednesday, with a strong warning of potential flash floods in some regions.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to the agency’s outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, Monday morning will likely bring thunderstorms and moderate rainfall over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States in the North. By afternoon and evening, these weather conditions are expected to intensify across the entire northern region.

NiMet highlighted a heightened risk of flooding in Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi States during this period.

In the North-Central zone, light rain is expected in the morning over areas including Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa. Later in the day, similar rainfall patterns are likely to extend to Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and the FCT.

For the southern region, cloudy skies are forecast, with morning showers in parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa. Afternoon rainfall is also anticipated in these states, as well as in Osun, Oyo, Ondo, and Ekiti. The agency flagged the possibility of flooding in Oyo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta States.

Tuesday’s outlook suggests morning thunderstorms and moderate rains across Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Zamfara. The entire northern belt is expected to experience further thunderstorms by afternoon.

Light rainfall is predicted for the North-Central states, including the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue, throughout the day.

Southern states should also expect intermittent light showers across Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. There is a high risk of flooding in Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

On Wednesday, morning thunderstorms are forecast for parts of Taraba and Kaduna. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected over Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Adamawa, and parts of Taraba and Kaduna.

In the North-Central zone, morning showers are expected in Nasarawa, Niger, and the FCT, with intermittent light rains extending to Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue States in the evening.

For the South, cloudy skies and morning rains are forecast in Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, and Cross River. Light rains are expected across the region later in the day, with Bayelsa flagged for possible flooding.

NiMet advised the public to exercise caution, avoid driving under heavy rainfall, and activate emergency response systems in areas at risk of flash floods.
