Why Spend ₦712bn on Lagos Airport While Nigerians Starve? – ADC Questions Tinubu’s Priorities

Published

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised strong concerns over the Bola Tinubu administration’s proposed expenditure of ₦712 billion for the renovation of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described the proposed spending as both “reckless and insensitive,” questioning whether the National Assembly had given its approval for such a massive outlay.

Abdullahi argued that allocating such an enormous sum to a facility that has already undergone major renovations in recent years highlights the government’s fiscal irresponsibility, especially at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship.

According to reports, the renovation plan was among the resolutions adopted at the most recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. However, the ADC contended that the Lagos international airport remains fully operational and in decent condition, suggesting that the funds would be better channelled toward projects with more immediate benefits for citizens.

The statement read in part:
“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) strongly condemns the Tinubu administration’s proposed ₦712 billion airport renovation as yet another glaring example of fiscal recklessness and official indifference to the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

“It is difficult to understand the rationale behind spending ₦712 billion on an airport that has already seen considerable upgrades, particularly in a country where public universities are in dire need of funding, basic healthcare is out of reach for many, and millions are trapped in poverty due to misguided government policies.

“What the aviation sector urgently requires is not another gold-plated terminal, but consistent maintenance, operational efficiency, and investment in regional airports to enhance connectivity across the country.”

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has stated that it is closely reviewing the recent Supreme Court judgment concerning the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as part of efforts to avoid legal or political complications ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the position was contained in a statement released on Friday and signed by the movement’s spokesperson, Habibu Sale Mohammed.

The group commended the Supreme Court for what it described as firmness and clarity in addressing the dispute, adding that the ruling reinforced due process.

It described the judgment, which overturned earlier orders that had caused confusion within the party, as a positive step toward restoring order and strengthening democratic institutions.

The statement read, “By correcting the procedural irregularities that led to the artificial suspension of party leadership, the court has restored order and reaffirmed that institutions must operate within the bounds of the law.”

Although the substantive matter has been referred back to the trial court, the movement said the ruling has already laid a foundation for fairness and proper judicial consideration moving forward.

Concerns Over Political Implications

The Kwankwasiyya Movement explained that it is carefully analysing the implications of the judgment due to the limited time left in the electoral cycle.

It stated, “At this critical juncture, we are carefully studying the judgment and rigorously analysing its implications, particularly in light of the limited time within the electoral cycle.”

According to the group, this step is necessary to ensure that its leader and other key political actors are not affected by any legal or political complications that could hinder their participation in the 2027 elections.

It added, “This is necessary to ensure that we do not inadvertently fall into any political or legal trap that could undermine or prevent our principal and other key actors within the opposition from effectively participating in the 2027 general elections.”

The movement further disclosed that it is considering all lawful and strategic political options, including possible collaborations with other parties.

It mentioned platforms such as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) as part of its ongoing consultations.

According to the statement, the group’s priority is to safeguard democratic participation and ensure citizens are not disenfranchised.

“Our objective remains clear: to safeguard our political rights, protect democratic participation, and ensure that no contrived circumstances are allowed to silence the voice of the people,” it said.

The movement assured supporters that a formal decision on its political direction would be announced soon.

“In no distant time, an official position of our leader regarding a new political alignment will be communicated,” the statement added.

It also emphasized the importance of strong democratic institutions and active citizen engagement in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.

“Nigeria’s democracy must be protected not only by the strength of its institutions but by the courage of its people to stand firm in the face of uncertainty,” it said.

Members were urged to remain calm and focused as consultations continue, with the movement reaffirming its unity and commitment to the democratic process.

Shock In PDP As Bala Mohammed Set To Announce Exit Within Days.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has stated that he will announce his decision on leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) within the next one week.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He said he has already begun consultations with other political parties, following the ongoing crisis in the PDP and the nullification of the party’s Ibadan national convention.

Mohammed made the disclosure during an interview with BBC Hausa, days after the Supreme Court annulled the PDP convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

He said his camp has accepted the court ruling as an act of divine will, noting that it should not be seen as a total victory or defeat for any side.

According to him, “As democrats and committed PDP members who respect the rule of law, we accept the judgment as the will of Allah. It is neither a total defeat for us nor a complete victory for the other side.

“The efforts we made to defend the rights of our supporters and uphold democracy are clear. While our Ibadan convention was nullified, their leadership was also set aside.

“In line with the party’s constitution, the Board of Trustees will take charge of affairs pending the emergence of an interim leadership, since the court has invalidated the current structure.”

The governor had earlier received a delegation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, at the Bauchi Government House.

The delegation reportedly visited on behalf of ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, to persuade him to join the party, with Mohammed allegedly describing the ADC as a possible alternative platform.

He has also met with President Bola Tinubu and other political leaders, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) delegation led by its National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, also visited Bauchi for talks that later collapsed over disagreements on party structure control.

Wike Blamed For PDP Crisis

Mohammed accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of deepening divisions within the PDP and weakening the party from within.

He said, “We find ourselves in a difficult situation. Nyesom Wike and many of his associates are with the APC. His presence in the PDP was aimed at frustrating the party, and to some extent, that has happened. At the same time, we ensured he did not take full control.

“Given the limited time, we have begun consultations with other political parties where our people can secure tickets and contest. We do not have the time to form an interim leadership and obtain INEC approval within a few days.

“The focus now is to identify a stable platform for our candidates to participate in the coming elections.”

He further alleged that there were efforts to impose a sole presidential candidate ahead of the elections, warning that such a move would undermine democracy.

Mohammed said while he remains loyal to the PDP, the current situation has forced his camp to explore other options.

“With only a few days left, we are working to conclude discussions on where to move… Within a week, we will make our position known in Bauchi,” he said.

He also appealed to his supporters to remain calm, assuring aspirants that they would be given opportunities to contest under whichever platform is eventually chosen.

Presidential Ambition And Alliances

The governor ruled out a presidential bid, explaining that the PDP had already zoned the presidency to the South.

Instead, he said he would contest the Bauchi South senatorial seat.

On possible political alliances, Mohammed confirmed ongoing consultations with key opposition figures, including Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi.

“We are in talks with Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi. There are calls for the opposition to unite under one platform, but that is not easy. Political realities differ across states and regions, as do the needs of the people,” he added.
