Travel Trouble: Immigration Warns Nigerians Misusing U.S. Visas Face Grave Consequences”
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a strong advisory, urging Nigerians to use their U.S. visas strictly in accordance with the stated purpose for which they were granted.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This comes in response to growing concerns by the United States Government over the misuse of visas by some Nigerian nationals.
In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, the NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, emphasized that all Nigerian holders of U.S. visas must comply fully with the conditions attached to their visas.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to alert the public to the concerns raised by the U.S. Government regarding the misuse of U.S. visas by certain Nigerian citizens. Visa holders are advised to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications,” the statement read.
Akinlabi warned that U.S. authorities conduct ongoing security checks beyond the initial point of entry, and any violation of immigration laws—such as overstaying or misuse of visa categories—could lead to visa revocation, deportation, or permanent ineligibility for future travel.
He stressed that the United States is committed to maintaining a secure and transparent visa system and expects all travelers to observe its immigration laws diligently.
The NIS also cautioned Nigerian students in the U.S. to remain enrolled in active academic programmes and avoid unauthorized withdrawal or absenteeism, warning that such actions may result in visa cancellation and loss of future eligibility.
Additionally, the Service noted that U.S. consular officers reserve the right to deny tourist visa applications if there is any suspicion that the applicant intends to give birth in the U.S. for the purpose of securing citizenship for their child.
“The NIS will continue to work closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not subject to expanded visa restrictions,” Akinlabi stated.
He concluded by appealing to all Nigerians to comply with U.S. visa regulations, adding that responsible conduct is vital to preserving legitimate travel opportunities for citizens.
